Galvanised Steel Tank Reline recently completed in Colchester, Essex.

Our client required a cost effective alternative to carrying out the full water tank replacement of two galvanised steel water storage tanks.

Both water storage tanks were also located on the roof of a very busy hospital.

This ensured it would’ve been incredibly difficult to replace the water tanks without causing a great deal of disturbance by cutting up the existing tanks and carrying them through the hospital.

However, the existing storage tanks were both non-compliant with ACOP L8 guidelines, including the HSG 274 technical guidance therefore a practical solution was required.

Our client subsequently decided upon the sustainable solution of carrying out the full water tank relining and refurbishment of their sites storage tanks.

The Water Tank Relining Process

Both water tanks had been previously coated with a bituminous coating which isn’t WRAS approved and had began to to fail in numerous areas subsequently causing the steel panels underneath to corrode. 

Our operatives initially extensively prepared all internal surfaces ensuring the non-compliant bitumen coating was completely removed utilising mechanical hand tools.

In various areas the exposed steel surfaces had become damaged, we ensured these areas were repaired using an epoxy filler where required.

With the preparation completed, our operatives were then in position to apply the first coat of WRAS approved ES 988 DWPU coating to all internal surfaces.

This was left to cure prior to applying the second full coat.

Our operatives then carried out minor remedial works which included installing water tank insulation to both storage tanks and fitting rodent screens to the overflows of both tanks.

Now with both storage tanks compliant with ACOP L8 guidelines our team carried out the full water tank clean and disinfection of both tanks prior to placing the cold water down services back online.

Arrived very quickly when the crisis developed in the 100-year-old water tanks in this Grade 1 listed building; did what looks a highly professional job (re-lining two hard to get at tanks in the roof) all in one day - which involved working really late - and were careful to make no mess and cause no damage.
