Water tank replacement project recently completed in Mayfair, central London.
The existing water storage tanks had completely failed ensuring they were impossible to refurbish or repair by carrying out a full tank reline.
Almost all the water tanks joints had failed, including the butyl mastic between the panels in the dividing wall which subsequently caused water to leak from one compartment into the adjacent compartment.
This issue had caused ongoing maintenance complications as it was impossible to complete a water tank clean and disinfection without isolating both water storage tanks at the same time.
To avoid this issue happening again our solution involved installing two separate GRP water storage tanks therefore eliminating the possibility of future complications which could be caused by a leaking dividing wall.
Due to the site being a fully occupied hotel we also had to ensure that disruption to the guests water services were kept to an absolute minimum.
Therefore prior commencing the works our operatives installed a mains bypass which ensured all guests still had access to cold water services throughout the duration of our tank installation.
Water Tank Replacement Process
Following on from the installation of the mains bypass our operatives initially drained down both existing water storage tanks prior to dismantling all panels.
Due to the age of the water tanks this proved to be particularly difficult as the mild steel bolts were highly corroded.
In this case a reciprocating saw was utilised to cut the panels into smaller pieces making them easier to remove from the tank room.
With the existing water storage tanks completely removed, our operatives ensured the tank rooms floor was completely flat and level.
Mild steel supports were then laid horizontally on the plant room floor which would be used to help support the new GRP water tanks.
The next step required our operatives to begin carefully fitting the GRP storage tanks base panels in place.
This was followed by fitting all side walls and the water tanks roof.
With the water tanks now installed our operatives were in the position to fit the inlet float valves inside each tank and carry out all pipe work alterations required to complete the storage tank installation project.
Both storage tanks were then clean & disinfected prior to placing the hotels cold water down services back online
