Water tank relining completed in three separate apartment blocks in Dublin, Ireland.
Our customer required the full internal refurbishment and tank lining of three heavily corroded galvanised steel cold water storage tanks located on the outskirts of Dublin.
The storage tanks had been installed in the roof spaces of each apartment block over twenty years ago during the construction of the apartments.
However, at the time no consideration was made regarding how access could be made into each water tank to carry out future water tank cleans and maintenance works.
This significant oversight meant that the required routine water tank cleaning of the storage tanks had never been carried out since their installation date.
The Sustainable Solution
Prior to carrying out the works we attended a meeting with our customer which included carrying out an in depth survey of the apartment blocks.
The goal of this meeting was to find a sustainable and cost effective way to refurbish and complete the tank lining of all three of sites storage tanks.
Our customer initially considered completely replacing the storage tanks and carrying out a full turnkey water tank replacement.
However, due to the incredibly restricted access within the roof space this would have been almost impossible to complete without carrying out highly disruptive modifications to the existing roof spaces.
The decision was then made to carry out the water tank relining of all three storage tanks.
To overcome the access issues surrounding gaining entry into the water tanks themselves we made the decision install side access hatch’s which would essentially future proof the water tanks.
This modification would not only allow our operatives safe access into the water tanks to carry out our initial water tank reline works, but also future statutory required maintenance works such as water tank cleaning and disinfections.
Water Tank Relining Process
Our operatives initially attended site and drained all three water storage tanks.
With the tanks drained we then cut square holes into the side of each storage tank and sealed the side access hatch frames into place.
This modification now also meant our operatives were able to safely gain entry into the storage tanks.
Due to the years of neglect from not carrying out any water tank cleaning works, there was a huge buildup of debris and sediment at the base of all the water tanks, we ensured this was all removed.
The next step of the project required the full internal preparation of the tanks internal surfaces which ensured all corrosion deposits were completely removed.
Our operatives were then in a position to stripe coat all edges and critical areas prior to applying the first full coat of WRAS approved polyurethane coating to all internal surfaces.
The first coat was left to cure which was then followed by the application of the second full coat of blue drinking water polyurethane to all surfaces.
With the galvanised steel tank reline complete, the GRP side access hatches were secured in place, each storage tank was disinfected and their individual systems were placed back online.
