Galvanised steel water tank replacement recently completed in Kent.
The installation of galvanised steel water tanks has been a popular choice for storing and distributing water for many years.
However, as time passes, the effectiveness and reliability of these water tanks may diminish due to several factors.
This article will explain why our client decided their three galvanised steel water storage tanks were to be replaced with a newer more efficient alternative.
Galvanised Steel Water Tank Issues
- Corrosion: The galvanised steel water tanks were coated with a layer of zinc to protect against rust and corrosion. However, over time, the zinc layer may wear off or become damaged, exposing the steel to the elements. This can cause the tank to rust, leading to leaks and the contamination of the water stored inside.
- Coating failure: The water tanks internal surfaces had been previously coated with a fibre glass lining system which had completely failed allowing for water ingress underneath, accelerating the spread of corrosion.
- Age: As with any material, galvanised steel water tanks can deteriorate over time. After decades of use, the water tanks had become weakened, leading to structural problems which could potentially compromise the safety and reliability of the water supply.
- Maintenance: To ensure the longevity of a galvanised steel water tank, regular maintenance is required. This includes water tank cleaning, inspections, and water tank repairs. Neglecting these tasks can cause problems to escalate and could result in the complete failure of the storage tanks.
Installation Of GRP Cold Water Storage Tanks
In the case of our clients three galvanised steel water tanks, it was determined that they were no longer fit for use due to a combination of these factors.
The storage tanks had been in service for over 40 years and had suffered from severe corrosion and coating failures.
Additionally, there were concerns about the structural integrity of the tanks, which could have led to catastrophic failure.
To replace the old water tanks, a newer alternative was chosen, which in this case was the installation of two new sectional GRP cold water storage tanks.
GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is known for it’s durability and resistance to corrosion, making it the ideal material for long-term water storage.
Sectional GRP cold water storage tanks also require less maintenance than galvanised steel tanks, which means less cost and time spent on upkeep.
In conclusion, our client’s decision to replace their galvanised steel water tanks was based on several factors, including corrosion, age, and maintenance concerns.
The new storage tanks will provide a more reliable and safe water supply, with less need for ongoing maintenance.
