How To Prevent Water Tank Corrosion

Comprehensive Guide to Preventing Water Tank Corrosion

Water tank corrosion poses a significant threat to the longevity and reliability of water storage tanks. Employing a comprehensive approach to prevent corrosion is crucial for ensuring the durability and safety of these tanks. Here’s an in-depth exploration of various strategies and methods to safeguard water tanks from corrosion.

Optimal Material Selection

Choosing the appropriate water tank material is the cornerstone of corrosion prevention. Materials like stainless steel, fiberglass, polyethylene, and polyurethane coated steel offer superior resistance to corrosion. Their intrinsic properties act as a shield against chemical reactions, reducing the likelihood of corrosion and deterioration.

Regular Water Tank Inspection Practices

Frequent and thorough inspections are pivotal in detecting early signs of corrosion. Periodic checks as recommended in the ACOP L8 guidelines enable the identification of rust spots, discoloration, or structural weakening. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent corrosion from spreading and causing extensive damage and potentially assisting in the harbouring of Legionella bacteria.

Protective Coating Applications

Applying protective coatings or liners to the tank’s interior surface forms a robust barrier between the stored water and the tank material. Specialist polyurethane and epoxy coatings formulated specifically for water tanks create a protective shield, effectively preventing corrosive elements from affecting the water tanks structure.

Sustaining Water Quality

Maintaining high water quality is essential in corrosion prevention. Regular monitoring and treatment of the water supply prevent the buildup of high acidity or the presence of corrosive chemicals that can expedite corrosion. Routine cleaning and water treatment procedures are paramount.

Cathodic Protection Methods

Implementing cathodic protection systems, such as sacrificial anodes or impressed current systems, is an effective measure to divert corrosion away from the tank material. These systems function by sacrificially corroding themselves instead of the tank, preserving its structural integrity.

Mitigating Physical Damage

Preventing physical damage to the tank surface is crucial in slowing down the corrosion process. Any dents, scratches, or surface compromises during installation or maintenance can accelerate corrosion. Proper handling and care are vital.

Ensuring Proper Installation Practices

Correct installation techniques play a pivotal role in preventing corrosion. Proper grounding and isolation of the tank from other metals that might cause galvanic corrosion are essential. Adhering to recommended installation procedures is imperative

Moisture Control Measures

Controlling the tank environment to limit moisture accumulation or exposure to excessive humidity is critical. Moisture exacerbates corrosion, making it imperative to regulate the water tanks surroundings effectively.

By implementing these comprehensive strategies and consistently maintaining preventive measures, the risks of water tank corrosion can be significantly minimized. Regular assessments, meticulous care, and adherence to preventive protocols are fundamental in preserving the tank’s structural integrity and ensuring its long-term functionality.

Maintaining an active focus on corrosion prevention not only extends the life of water storage tanks but also ensures the safety and quality of stored water for various applications, benefiting both residential and industrial users alike.

We manage a large residential block and recently reached out to Echo to quote to reline two water tanks that were failing. An absolute fantastic service all round. A quote was received within a day or so. Works were booked in and communication was excellent. We were really impressed with the engineers on the day. They communicated well on the day in terms of the plan of action. Once the work was complete, they ensured all areas were left clean and tidy. A follow up report post works was sent very soon after the works. We look forward to working with Echo again. If you need honest, reliable contractors who will get the job done and to a high a standard, don't hesitate to get in touch with them.Thank you.

I contacted Echo Square on behalf of a client of mine who urgently needed her Victorian underground Cistern re lined. The work was quoted for promptly and the work carried out to a high standard by the engineers who were courteous and friendly despite their long drive to site. My client was very impressed and so grateful to have her Cistern back in working order. I would highly recommend this company and will most definitely approach them again should I have another client with tank issues in the future. 5 star service!

Having used other companies in the past I can wholeheartedly say that our dealings with Nationwide Tank Relining have been a breath of fresh air. We have had tanks relined, water hygiene assessments and floor coatings. All work was carried out in a timely manner and the quality of work has each and every time been exemplary. My bosses are thrilled with my decision to switch to Nationwide Tank Relining and a tank that was relined 10 years ago by them still looks good as new internally, and the money we've saved from choosing the right supplier has proven to be a very smart business move. Highly recommended!
