Water Tank Cleaning Tips

At Echo Square, we are passionate about Water Tank Cleaning, and the importance of keeping your water tanks sanitary. We recently made a blog post relating to the importance of Water Tank cleaning. So here are our essential tips for safety, health and most importantly compliance.

Common Methods of Water Tank Cleaning

People use different methods to clean water tanks, depending on the tanks size, type of contamination, and material. Some common techniques include:

  • Manual Cleaning: This involves draining the tank and scrubbing the interior surfaces with brushes to remove dirt, algae, and biofilms. It’s effective for small to medium-sized tanks but can be labor-intensive.
  • Pressure Washing: You can use high-pressure water jets to dislodge debris, grime, and contaminants from the tank’s interior walls and floor. It is suitable for larger tanks where manual scrubbing is impractical.
  • Chemical Cleaning and Disinfection: This involves using approved disinfectants, like chlorine or hydrogen peroxide, to kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. You often combine this method with manual or pressure washing to ensure complete cleanliness.
  • Robotic Cleaning: In larger or more complex tanks, you can use robotic cleaning systems equipped with cameras and cleaning nozzles. They offer a non-invasive, efficient, and effective way to clean without draining the tank completely.

Signs That a Water Tank Needs Cleaning

Knowing when a water tank needs cleaning can prevent issues before they escalate. Some signs that indicate a need for immediate cleaning include:

  • Visible Sediment or Dirt: Sediment build-up at the bottom of the tank or visible dirt on the walls signals a need for cleaning.
  • Foul Odour: Unpleasant smells can result from organic matter or bacteria build-up, indicating contamination.
  • A change in water taste or colour: Cloudiness, a strange taste, or discolouration, indicates possible contamination.
  • Unusual Sounds: Gurgling noises or changes in water flow might suggest sediment build-up is affecting the system.

Health Risks of Neglecting Water Tank Cleaning

Legionella

Besides Legionella, several other health risks are associated with dirty water tanks. Contaminated water can harbor pathogens like E. coli, Pseudomonas, and other harmful bacteria that cause gastrointestinal issues, skin infections, and respiratory problems. For those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly or people with chronic illnesses, these risks are significantly higher. Regular cleaning helps to minimize these risks by keeping the water safe for consumption and use.

Environmental and Cost Benefits of Regular Cleaning

Regular water tank cleaning has both environmental and economic benefits. Clean tanks reduce the risk of leaks and structural damage that can lead to water waste. It also helps maintain the efficiency of pumps and filters, prolonging their lifespan and reducing the need for costly repairs or replacements. Furthermore, by ensuring that water remains clean, there is less need for excessive chemical treatments or filtration processes, which can have an environmental impact.

Regulations and Compliance Requirements

In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provides specific guidelines under the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP L8) for controlling Legionella in water systems. Adhering to these regulations not only ensures safety but also helps avoid legal liabilities and potential fines.

DIY vs. Professional Water Tank Cleaning

While some homeowners may attempt to clean their water tanks themselves, professional services offer several advantages:

  • Expertise and Equipment: Professionals have the knowledge, experience, and specialized tools needed to perform a thorough cleaning.
  • Safety: Handling certain chemicals and cleaning large tanks can pose risks. Professionals are trained to manage these safely.
  • Compliance: Certified companies follow regulatory guidelines and can provide documentation of the cleaning, which may be required for compliance or insurance purposes.

Echo Square are trained and have the professional qualifications and experience to clean and disinfect water tanks. If you need any help with Water Tank Cleaning, please get in touch.

Maintenance Tips to Keep Water Tanks Clean

Regular tank cleaning is important, but there are also steps you can take to keep your tank clean for longer:

  • Regular Inspections: Inspect the tank for any signs of damage, corrosion, or leaks.
  • Install a Tank Cover: Ensure that the tank has a secure cover to prevent debris, insects, or small animals from entering.
  • Use Filters: Install filters at entry points to prevent sediment and other particulates from entering the tank.
  • Monitor Water Quality: Regularly test the water for pH levels, bacterial contamination, and other quality indicators.

Technological Advancements in Water Tank Cleaning

The water tank cleaning industry has seen several technological advancements, including remote-controlled robots for internal tank inspection and cleaning, UV sterilization to reduce bacterial growth, and smart monitoring systems that provide real-time data on water quality and tank conditions. These technologies help ensure better cleaning outcomes, reduce downtime, and provide a safer environment.

These additional topics provide a more comprehensive understanding of water tank cleaning and its importance. Regular maintenance, adherence to safety guidelines, and staying informed about the latest cleaning technologies all contribute to maintaining safe and reliable water systems.

We manage a large residential block and recently reached out to Echo to quote to reline two water tanks that were failing. An absolute fantastic service all round. A quote was received within a day or so. Works were booked in and communication was excellent. We were really impressed with the engineers on the day. They communicated well on the day in terms of the plan of action. Once the work was complete, they ensured all areas were left clean and tidy. A follow up report post works was sent very soon after the works. We look forward to working with Echo again. If you need honest, reliable contractors who will get the job done and to a high a standard, don't hesitate to get in touch with them.Thank you.

I contacted Echo Square on behalf of a client of mine who urgently needed her Victorian underground Cistern re lined. The work was quoted for promptly and the work carried out to a high standard by the engineers who were courteous and friendly despite their long drive to site. My client was very impressed and so grateful to have her Cistern back in working order. I would highly recommend this company and will most definitely approach them again should I have another client with tank issues in the future. 5 star service!

Having used other companies in the past I can wholeheartedly say that our dealings with Nationwide Tank Relining have been a breath of fresh air. We have had tanks relined, water hygiene assessments and floor coatings. All work was carried out in a timely manner and the quality of work has each and every time been exemplary. My bosses are thrilled with my decision to switch to Nationwide Tank Relining and a tank that was relined 10 years ago by them still looks good as new internally, and the money we've saved from choosing the right supplier has proven to be a very smart business move. Highly recommended!
