If you have a water tank in your building, you may have heard the term “Water Tank Relining” before. In this blog post we will highlight the benefits of water tank relining, and when you should look for this service to be undertaken.
What is Tank Relining?
Water tank relining aims to renew and refurbish an existing water tank. This is less costly than completely replacing your water tank. You may not know this, but it’s much more sustainable too. Tank relining is where a coating is applied to the inside of a tank.
Over time, liquid storage tanks are subject to pressure and corrosion from water, and other liquid contained in the tank. The overall weight of the liquid stored can put pressure on the joints, walls and base of the structure. This can sadly lead to pollution in the water. Additionally, leaks can develop which allow further contamination by foreign material to enter through the leak point.
How do you know your tank needs to be relined?

This is a question we are asked often. Aside from experiencing a leaking tank, there might be other signs you have noticed too.
We highly recommend that you regularly test your water, as high amounts of bacteria can then be detected. It is also important to implement procedures to monitor and control the risks of Legionella bacteria.
Legionnaire’s disease is a form of pneumonia which can be fatal if contracted via an aerosol which is inhaled by the victim, often via showers or misting systems.
It is important that you have stringent control regimes for Legionella in line with the Health & Safety Executive’s Approved Code of Practice (ACOP L8).
Tank Relining methods
Every tank relining project is different. However often the most appropriate relining process is dependent on the structure size, and how it’s constructed. The water tanks’ internal condition is also taken into account, and what substrate our operatives would be preparing and applying our coating to. For example, if the water tank is concrete, galvanised steel, or glass reinforced plastic.
No matter what material is used, the internal surfaces of all structures must be prepared before the coating is applied.
You can read more about how we fully reline a tank on our tank relining service page. For now though, let’s list the full benefits.
The Benefits
Cost Effective
As mentioned above, replacing a water tank can be very expensive. As a business, you will want to save money where possible. In most cases, tanks can be relined rather than replaced. It’s also much more sustainable too.
Less Downtime
Most tank relining projects can be performed outside of hours or over weekends. This means you will face little to no downtime, plus most water tanks and process vessels are separated into two compartments. This way, operatives can work on one compartment at a time.
Fast Curing Times
Our solvent free polyurethane system ES 988 DWPU has very fast curing times which ensures in some cases full water tank relines can be carried out within just a couple of days. The fully refurbished water tank can then be cleaned, disinfected & refilled in line with ACoP L8 guidelines prior to being put back into service.
Poor Access
More often than not, water tanks have been installed where it is very difficult to replace the water tank, which makes relining the perfect solution. Replacing a tank with poor access can be dangerous, so it is much more safer to reline.
Long Term Guarantee
Choosing Echo Square to perform a tank reline service comes with a 10-year warranty covering against leaks, corrosion, and blistering. Typically, new water tank installations are only covered by a 12-month guarantee.
Conclusion
Of course, there are many more benefits to tank relining compared to a new tank installation. You can see the full benefits on our service page. However, we are sure we have convinced you already, so why not get in touch with Echo Square today and get a quote?
