Recently we completed a GRP Water Tank Replacement for a gym in Hatfield.
Our client required their Swimming Pool Balance tank to be replaced which is a vital component in many types of swimming pools. Particularly, these would be found in large and more advanced swimming pools.
Echo Square Services removed the old tank and installed the new one. Then we filled and disinfected the tank before putting the tank into operation.
The system was disinfected to a specification meeting the requirements of BS8558:2015 and PD855486:2015
What is a Swimming Pool Balance Tank?
Also simply known as a balance tank or surge tank, this vital component primarily regulates the water level. By doing this, a balance tank also maintains a balanced flow of water.
The Importance of a Balance Tank
While the above states the primary purpose of a swimming pool balance tank, let’s go into more detail about the importance of one.
Water Level Regulation
Usually located adjacent to or connected to the main swimming pool. The balance tank acts as a reservoir that collects excess water that overflows from the pool due to swimmers’ movements, splashing, or other factors. This excess water is temporarily stored in the balance tank until it can be reintroduced back into the pool.
Preventing Overflow
When swimmers enter the pool, they displace water, causing the water level to rise. Without a balance tank, the water level could rise to a point where it starts overflowing from the pool’s edges. The balance tank helps prevent this by providing a space for the excess water to collect, avoiding overflow and maintaining a safe water level.
Maintaining Water Quality
The balance tank also plays a crucial role in maintaining water quality. As swimmers move in the pool, they introduce debris, body oils, sunscreen, and other contaminants into the water. The balance tank serves as a collection point for some of these contaminants, preventing them from recirculating directly into the main pool and allowing the pool’s filtration and treatment systems to more effectively remove them.
Even Water Flow
The balance tank helps to ensure a consistent and even flow of water within the pool. When swimmers create waves or disturbances in the water, the excess water is temporarily diverted to the balance tank. This helps prevent turbulent water conditions in the main pool, making it more enjoyable for swimmers and aiding in pool maintenance.
Hydraulic Stability
In larger pools or pools with complex water features like waterfalls, fountains, or jets, the balance tank assists in maintaining hydraulic stability. These features can cause water surges and fluctuations in the pool’s water level. The balance tank helps absorb and regulate these surges, preventing damage to pool infrastructure and providing a safer and more controlled environment.
To conclude, a balance tank acts as a buffer for the swimming pool. This helps manage the water level and maintains the overall functionality of the pool. It is a key element for pools especially those designed for competitive swimming.
