Water tank reline recently completed at a major hospital in Essex.
Our client required a sustainable solution to help repair a leaking GRP water tank which served all drinking water outlets in their emergency ward.
It was impossible to take the water tank system completely offline therefore we initially assessed the system to ensure it was linked by a common manifold to an adjacent storage tank.
This ensured we were able to drain down, and isolate the water storage vessel which required tank relining by allowing the emergency wards cold water services to be fed by the parallel water tank.
From our initial assessment of the storage tank it became apparent that the water tank was leaking from numerous horizontal joints.
This issue is very common with sectional GRP tanks which is often caused by the movement of the water tank when it empties and refills, placing considerable pressure on the individual tank panels.
Fortunately in this case only the joints required reinforcing as we often find the panels themselves can in fact crack and would require fibre glass repairing prior to the application of a coating system
Water tank reline process
Our operatives initially isolated, drained, and dried out the leaking GRP water tank.
The low level inspection hatch was also removed to lower the confined spaces risks associated with working inside the water tank ensuring a far safer working environment for our operatives.
Once inside, our operatives began preparing all joints between the tanks panels and reinforcing all critical areas, in particular the area from which the water tank leak occurred.
The next step involved utilising mechanical hand tools to extensively prepare all internal surfaces to ensure the tanks surfaces were in position to accept our polyurethane coating system.
With all internal surfaces now fully prepared, and all water tank repairs carried out our operatives were in a position to stripe coat all joints and critical areas.
The joints were allowed the optimum time to cure prior to applying two full coats of WRAS approved polyurethane to all internal surfaces.
With the full water tank relining and refurbishment completed we were then in a position to clean and disinfect the water storage tank and place the system back online.
